John M. Smith's book was the inspiration for a segment of ESPN's new series “The Undefeated.” The program interviewed Smith, who is an assistant professor in the Ivan Allen College School of History and Sociology at Georgia Tech.

“To understand Malcolm as a political figure is to understand that he embodied African-American oral culture,” said Johnny Smith, co-author(link is external) of Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X. “He believed in the power of words. He was very deliberate in his choice of words.”
