Overview

HANCHAO LU is a historian specializing in modern East Asian history. Lu has published extensively in principal journals in the fields and is the author of nine single-authored monographies published by major university presses, including three award-winning books and, most recently, Shanghai Tai Chi: The Art of Being Ruled in Mao’s China (Cambridge University Press, 2023). Lu has been the editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal, Chinese Historical Review and is the editor of a sixteen-volume series, The Culture and Customs of Asia (ABC-Clio) and the editor of newly launched China Memoirs series. He has served as the president of Chinese Historians in the United States (CHUS) affiliated with both the American Historical Association and the Association for Asian Studies.  Lu held several visiting positions in prestigious institutions, including the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University; Humboldt University, Berlin; the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore; Academia Sinica, Taiwan; and Tsinghua University, Beijing, among others. He is also an honorary Senior Research Professor at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. Lu is the first faculty member at Georgia Tech to create and develop undergraduate and graduate curriculum on Asian history, society, and culture. In 2001, with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation and the Carter Center in an effort to fill up an important gap of Asian studies in the American south, Lu co-founded the China Research Center, an interuniversity center promotes understanding of greater China, and in 2017 managed to place the Center’s headquarters and journal, China Currents, to the Ivan Allen College at Georgia Tech.
