Kimya Loder
Assistant Professor
- School of History and Sociology
Overview
Dr. Kimya Loder earned a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University. Broadly speaking, her research draws upon theories of race, gender, and sexuality-based inequality offered by feminist and race scholars to understand the political behavior of marginalized groups. Her work is animated by the question, what resistance strategies are leveraged by groups that have been historically excluded from full participation in U.S. democratic processes? She has written several articles that explore the political attitudes and behaviors of multiply-marginalized groups including “Civic Narratives: Political Exclusion, Agency, and Civic Participation Among Black Residents in San Fransisco” (Qualitative Sociology, 2024). Her current work uses qualitative methods to understand the self-determination and movement building efforts of Black transgender women living in the U.S. South by examining (1) the strategies that they adopt to survive in volatile, contentious political environments and (2) the organizations the that they develop to acheive their social, economic, and political goals.
