Julia Melkers, associate professor in the School of Public Policy, has published the article "Lurking and participation in the virtual classroom: The effects of gender, race, and age among graduate students in computer science," in the journal Computers and Education.
The article explores patterns of participation in online academic programs, using the forum website Piazza as a setting for study. The results of the study showed that older participants are more active in discussions and that as class size grows, active participation goes down and "lurking behavior" increases.
