Calvin Zimmermann

Dr. Calvin Zimmermann received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. His research lies at the intersection of the sociology of education, race and ethnicity, and childhood. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, his work examines how racialized perceptions and practices shape Black children’s educational experiences and development, particularly during early childhood. His research investigates how schools evaluate and respond to children as well as how these processes contribute to racial inequalities in education. His current research extends this work by examining Black educational resistance and self-determination, particularly alternative educational spaces such as Black microschools and homeschooling cooperatives that seek to support Black children’s learning, development, and thriving.
