Bo Kyoung Kim
Lecturer of Korean and Linguistics
- School of Modern Languages
Overview
Bo Kyoung Kim received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a linguist specializing in Korean morphosyntax and the syntax–semantics interface, with a particular focus on the cognitive grounding of grammatical structure. Her research examines the interaction between form, meaning, and discourse, especially in the domains of metonymy, modality, egophoricity, and clause-final phenomena in Korean. Methodologically, her work integrates corpus-based quantitative analysis, pragmatic annotation, and computationally informed approaches to linguistic theory.
Dr. Kim joined the School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014. She teaches a wide range of courses in Korean language and linguistics, including Elementary and Intermediate Korean, Contemporary Korean, Selected Readings of Modern Korean, Korean Media and Public Culture, Technology and Business Korean Translation, Korean Community Service Learning, Applications of Linguistics, and Introduction to Linguistics. Her teaching bridges theoretical linguistics, applied analysis, and community-engaged language education.
Her broader research interests include Bilingualism/Second Language Acquisition, Korean linguistics, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, language typology, computational linguistics, digital humanities, and pedagogy in the AI era. Her current research advances a cognitively grounded account of Korean grammatical markers, investigating how grammatical constructions encode speaker stance, discourse organization, and perspective. By combining corpus evidence with theoretical modeling, her work contributes to broader discussions in cognitive linguistics, cross-linguistic comparison, and the syntax–pragmatics interface.
