Daniel Phelps develops experimental narrative systems that interrogate and expand the boundaries of media and design practice. His work synthesizes advanced computational methods ranging from robotics and real-time simulation to physical computing and generative AI with aesthetic frameworks such as anamorphosis and multimodal design. This integration operates not simply as a technical enterprise but as a critical exploration of how technological processes mediate perception, embodiment, and interactivity. Within these immersive media architectures, Phelps cultivates conditions of connection, wonder, and curiosity, inviting audiences into encounters that are both intellectually and affectively generative.

Interests

Teaching Interests:
My teaching philosophy is grounded in a singular fundamental belief: students deserve faculty who understand the field through active practice and sustained engagement. With this experience, I shepherd students in developing creative mastery while thinking critically about technology's role in culture and creative expression.
Research Interests:
My research examines the intersection of emerging technologies and creative practice, with particular emphasis on how immersive media technologies (VR, AR, XR) reshape narrative, audience experience, and the relationship between creator and viewer. My work bridges computational media theory, practice-based creative research, and critical examination of how technological systems shape cultural expression. Research interests include: immersive narrative and documentary practice; computational approaches to innovative storytelling; generative AI applications in creative workflows; visual epistemology and emerging media; ethics and representation in immersive technologies; and technology accessibility in creative industries.
