Overview

Dr. Cardentey is a scholar of Caribbean and Latin American literary and cultural studies at Georgia Tech, specializing in affect theory, historical novel, speculative fiction, and transnational cultural exchanges. He completed his undergraduate studies in Humanities with a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Havana. He also holds a master’s degree in Hispanic Philology from the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid, Spain. Dr. Cardentey worked as a research associate for the Institute of Literature and Linguistics in the Cuban Academy of Sciences, and as a copyeditor at Wifredo Lam Center for Contemporary Art.

His research has been published in several journals, contributing to broader dialogues on Caribbean and Latin American studies, global modernities, and the politics of emotion in literature. These journals include Alambique: Revista Académica de Ciencia Ficción y Fantasía, Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies, and Bulletin of Spanish Studies. His book reviews have appeared in journals such as Cuban Studies and Afro-Hispanic Review. He has also contributed chapters to edited volumes, including A Cuban Cinema Companion (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019) and Historia de lo fantástico en las narrativas latinoamericanas (Iberoamericana Vervuert, 2024, vol. 2). In addition, he has served as a manuscript reviewer for Palgrave Macmillan, Caribbean Conjunctures: The Caribbean Association Journal, Alambique, and other academic publishers and journals.

At Georgia Tech, Dr. Cardentey teaches Spanish at all levels, as well as interdisciplinary courses on Caribbean culture, Latin American speculative fiction, and the Soviet influence in Cuban culture. His courses engage students in critical discussions on transnational identities and cultural hybridity, integrating his expertise in Hispanic linguistics and language pedagogy. His teaching effectiveness has been recognized with multiple placements on the Semester Honor Rolls, Thank a Teacher Program certificates, and the 2024 CIOS Award for Excellence in Instruction. His next collaborative pedagogical project is an open-access, fully digital Spanish program for STEM disciplines in higher education, integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into its content framework.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Cardentey actively supports student success through mentorship and advising, with many former students advancing in careers where Spanish proficiency is key. His service contributions include co-organizing the Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop, the first of its kind in the School of Modern Languages, and advising the student organization Georgia Tech Model United Nations (GTMUN). He has also organized film screenings for the Global Media Festival: Sustainability Across Languages and Cultures at Georgia Tech.

Dr. Cardentey co-leads the Language for Business and Technology (LBAT) study-abroad program in Cádiz, Spain. Committed to fostering linguistic and cultural competency, he continues to innovate at the intersection of language, technology, and global engagement.
