Overview

Dr. Cardentey is a scholar of Caribbean and Latin American literary and cultural studies at Georgia Tech, specializing in affect theory, historical fiction, and transnational cultural exchanges. His forthcoming book, Crítica de la pasión caribeña, explores how contemporary Caribbean historical novels impart historicity to affective and emotional structures underlying conflicts of race, gender, and class. His work engages theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Sara Ahmed, and Brian Massumi to analyze literary texts by Antonio Benítez Rojo, Julia Álvarez, and Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá.

Expanding on his commitment to global literary and cultural analysis, Dr. Cardentey’s current project, Affective Technologies, examines Soviet-Latin American scientific and cultural interactions, from Soviet technology exhibitions in Latin America to the influence of Soviet science fiction on Cuban literature. This research contributes to broader discussions on global studies, intercultural hybridity, transatlantic exchanges, and the ethics and philosophy of science and technology.

Dr. Cardentey's research and book reviews have been published in several journals, contributing to broader dialogues on Caribbean and Latin American studies, global modernities, and the politics of emotion in literature. These include Anuario L/L: Estudios Literarios, Alambique: Revista Académica de Ciencia Ficción y Fantasía, Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies, and Cuban Studies. He has also contributed to edited volumes such as A Cuban Cinema Companion (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019) and has reviewed manuscripts for Palgrave Macmillan, Caribbean Conjunctures: The Caribbean Association Journal, Alambique, and other publishers and journals.

At Georgia Tech, Dr. Cardentey teaches Spanish at all levels, as well as interdisciplinary courses on Caribbean culture, Latin American speculative fiction, and the Soviet influence in Cuban culture. His courses engage students in critical discussions on transnational identities and cultural hybridity, integrating his expertise in Hispanic linguistics and language pedagogy. His teaching effectiveness has been recognized with multiple placements on the Semester Honor Rolls, Thank a Teacher Program certificates, and the 2024 CIOS Award for Excellence in Instruction. His next collaborative pedagogical project is an open-access, fully digital Spanish program for STEM disciplines in higher education, integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals into its content framework.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Cardentey actively supports student success through mentorship and advising, with many former students advancing in careers where Spanish proficiency is key. His service contributions include co-organizing the Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop, the first of its kind in the School of Modern Languages, and advising the student organization Georgia Tech Model United Nations (GTMUN). He has also organized film screenings for the Global Media Festival: Sustainability Across Languages and Cultures at Georgia Tech.

Dr. Cardentey co-leads the Language for Business and Technology (LBAT) study-abroad program in Cádiz, Spain. Committed to fostering linguistic and cultural competency, he continues to innovate at the intersection of language, technology, and global engagement.
